The volleyball teams from South and Dimond are headed to a familiar place -- the state volleyball tournament.
The only teams to win Class 4A state championships in the last 14 years, both secured spots in next week’s state tournament by posting victories Thursday night at the Cook Inlet Conference tournament at Service High.
Dimond defeated East and South stopped Bartlett in winners bracket matches to clinch two of the CIC’s three state tournament berths. The third qualifier won’t be decided until Saturday afternoon.
Both teams took four-set wins. South, the winner of six state titles since 2005, triumphed 25-20, 20-25, 25-21, 25-17; Dimond, the winner of eight titles in the same span, including the last four in a row, won 25-17, 25-23, 20-25, 25-10.
The rivals will square off in a Friday night winner’s bracket match. Also on tap Friday are a pair of elimination matches -- East versus West, and Bartlett versus Chugiak. West and Chugiak stayed alive Wednesday by winning elimination matches.
The tournament wraps up Saturday with three matches, including a 6 p.m. championship match.
